Watchtower Games is an independent tabletop game publisher driven by a deep passion for creating engaging and immersive experiences for hobby gamers. Focused on board and card games for young adult audiences and above, the company values strategy, storytelling, and community engagement. As a professional logo designer, I was tasked with developing a distinctive visual identity that would not only reflect the company’s creative vision but also help the brand stand out in a competitive board game market.

The project required a strategic approach to both symbol and typography, exploring how a strong brand identity could support product recognition and enhance the overall game experience. Through extensive research, sketching, and digital iteration, the final logo incorporates negative space to subtly form a tower, symbolising authority, structure, and observation while remaining bold and memorable across all applications.

...We want the customer to feel like the product they are buying is solid and fun to play and that serious attention to detail was made...

Sketchbook Scamps

The design process began with extensive research into the tabletop gaming market, including competitor branding, visual trends, and the expectations of the target audience. This informed the development of original and differentiated concepts that would resonate with hobby gamers while avoiding clichés commonly seen in board and card game logos. As the logo designer, I explored a wide range of visual directions, balancing creativity with market relevance.

Early ideation was captured in detailed sketchbooks, where multiple logo approaches were developed, including pictorial ideas, symbolic abstractions, and typography explorations. This iterative process allowed the strongest concepts to emerge, ultimately guiding the project toward a final solution that combined clarity, creativity, and a strategic use of negative space to form the iconic tower.

Digital Concepts

After selecting the most promising concepts, the project moved into digital refinement. The composition was adjusted for balance, centralisation, and scalability, giving the logo versatility across different applications. As a logo designer, I focused on creating a mark that could function both as a striking abstract symbol and as a subtle reference to a tower, reinforcing themes of strategy and vision within the tabletop gaming world.

Digital iterations also explored colour palettes, typography treatments, and overall layout systems. These refinements strengthened brand recognition, improved readability, and created a professional identity that could seamlessly translate across print, digital, and game packaging, ensuring consistency and visual impact for both the company and its products.

Branding Typography

Typography played a critical role in establishing the structured and authoritative tone of the brand. I began with a geometric typeface that complemented the rigid form of the logo, but as the logo designer, I customised it to improve proportion, weight, and balance, creating a type treatment that harmonised with the tower symbol.

This careful adjustment ensured that the typography not only matched the logo visually but also enhanced legibility and adaptability across different media. The final typeface provides a cohesive voice for the brand, reinforcing its identity as a professional, strategic, and approachable publisher within the board game market.

Final Delivery

The final brand identity unifies symbol, typography, and colour into a cohesive visual system designed to resonate with tabletop gamers. The logo’s use of negative space creates a layered design, allowing it to function as both an abstract shape and a recognisable tower symbol. As a logo designer, I ensured that every element, from type to colour, communicated authority, creativity, and strategic thinking while maintaining versatility across applications.

A bold, high-contrast palette strengthens visibility and ensures the brand is memorable, while typography is refined for clarity and consistency. Together, these elements form a professional and adaptable identity system, supporting packaging, marketing materials, and product experiences, and clearly positioning Watchtower Games as a serious and creative player in the board game industry.

Final Product

The completed branding was applied to Watchtower Games’ first title, a fantasy dungeon crawler board game designed to immerse players in strategic, cooperative gameplay. The visual identity enhances the product by providing clear logo placement, cohesive colour systems, and unified design across box art, miniatures, and components. This work demonstrates how a logo designer’s strategic approach can elevate a game’s presentation and contribute to player engagement.

Despite the company facing challenges with crowdfunding and production, the project remains a strong example of effective board game branding. The final identity shows how considered visual design and professional logo development can strengthen product perception, create consistency, and communicate the value and creativity behind a tabletop game.
